Most tradie SEO advice is vague. "Do some keywords." "Get some backlinks." "Be on Google." None of it tells you what to actually do first, what can wait, and what's a waste of your money. This post is different — it's an order of operations. Do the things in the sequence below, in the weeks suggested, and you'll have built a genuine local SEO foundation by the end of your first ninety days.
Before You Start
Let's be honest about what SEO can and can't do for a trade business. It can put you in front of people actively searching for the work you do, in the areas you actually service — which is about as good a lead as exists. What it can't do is work overnight. Google Ads can have your phone ringing this afternoon; SEO takes weeks or months because it relies on Google slowly learning to trust your site. If you need enquiries today, run ads. If you want enquiries that keep coming without paying for every single click, build the SEO foundation alongside it.
The other thing worth saying upfront: there's no trick that gets a brand-new tradie site ranking in a week. Anyone promising that is either lying or about to do something that gets your site penalised. The plan below is the unglamorous, reliable version — the one that actually compounds over time.
Weeks 1–2: Fix the Foundations
Before you build anything, make sure the basics are solid. These are the things Google checks first, and they're free or cheap to get right.
Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. If you've never claimed it, that's step one — a lot of tradies haven't. Once it's yours, fill in every field: an accurate primary category, every service listed individually, your real service areas, a working phone number, your website link, and your opening hours (including whether you do after-hours callouts). We go deeper on this in our guide to getting your tradie business found on Google Maps.
Get your name, address and phone number identical everywhere. The same business name, the same address, the same phone number — on your website, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles, and any directories you're listed on. Inconsistent details confuse Google and weaken the confidence it has in your business. It sounds boring, but it matters.
Make sure your website loads fast on a phone and has click-to-call visible. Most of your potential customers are searching on a mobile, often standing in the problem they need fixed. If your site takes five seconds to load, they've already hit the back button. If they have to hunt for your number, they'll call the next business. A fast site with a tap-to-call button above the fold isn't optional — it's the baseline.
Weeks 3–6: Build the Pages Google Can Match to Searches
This is where most tradie websites fall down. Google ranks pages, not websites — so if you want to show up for "emergency plumber" and "hot water system repair," you need a dedicated page for each, not a single "Services" page with both buried in a list.
One page per main service. If you do hot water repairs, blocked drains, emergency plumbing and gas fitting, give each one its own page. A dedicated page lets you go deep — what the service involves, common questions, your process, what to expect — which gives both customers and Google far more to work with than a one-line bullet point. A single "Services" page that lists everything doesn't rank for any of it, because the page isn't specifically about any one thing.
One page per area you actually service. Be honest about where you work. If you cover the northern suburbs, build a page that genuinely explains how you service that area — the suburbs you drive to, the types of jobs you do there, local references that show you know the place. Don't pretend to cover the whole city; you'll attract enquiries you can't take on and frustrate the customers who did call. A handful of genuinely useful location pages beats fifty copy-paste ones with the suburb name swapped in.
This service-page-plus-location-page structure is the backbone of tradie SEO — and it's the pattern we build into every site from the start. For a broader rundown of the tactics that sit on top of it, our post on local SEO for tradies covers the full list.
Weeks 7–12: Earn Trust
Once your pages are built, the work shifts to signals that tell Google — and customers — that your business is real, active and trusted in your area.
Get genuine reviews. Ask happy customers at the right moment — right after a job well done, not weeks later — and make it easy by sending a direct link to your review page. Respond to reviews professionally, the good and the bad. Never buy or fake reviews; Google can spot it and it can get your profile suspended. Reviews influence both where you rank and whether a customer picks you once you're there.
Build local citations. Get your business listed accurately on the directories that matter for your area and trade. Same name, same address, same phone number — consistency is the point, not volume.
Add photos of real jobs. Before-and-after shots, photos of your team on site, your vehicle, your work. Real photos show you're an active, genuine business — to both customers and Google. They're also content that's hard for competitors to copy.
Ask for links the honest way. A link from your supplier's website, a local trade association, or a community group you sponsor is worth more than a hundred cheap links from low-quality sites. Ask the businesses you already have relationships with. Genuine links take effort, but they're the ones that last.
What to Ignore
There's a whole industry selling tradies things that sound like SEO but rarely move the needle. Save your money on these:
- Keyword stuffing. Cramming "plumber Brisbane" into every sentence reads badly to humans and can work against you with search engines. Write naturally.
- Huge blog output. Publishing dozens of thin, generic posts won't help you rank. A handful of genuinely useful articles answering real customer questions beats a hundred copy-paste ones.
- Cheap backlink packages. Paying for hundreds of links from low-quality sites is one of the fastest ways to get penalised. Earn links from real sources instead.
- Duplicate suburb pages. Dozens of thin pages with only the suburb name changed are easy for Google to spot and devalue. Build genuinely useful location pages instead.
- Ranking guarantees. Nobody can legitimately promise a specific Google ranking. Anyone who does is being dishonest with you.
How to Tell If It's Working
You don't need to guess. Two free tools tell you what's actually happening: your Google Business Profile insights and Google Search Console.
In your Google Business Profile, watch for more profile views, more direction requests, and more calls over the weeks. In Google Search Console, look for your site starting to appear in search results for your service and area queries — even if you're not on page one yet. Both are free, and both show you real data rather than vanity metrics.
What's a sensible expectation? In the first thirty days, you're mostly laying foundations — don't expect much visible movement. By sixty days, you might start seeing your site appearing in Search Console for more queries, and more profile views on your Google Business Profile. By ninety days, with the foundations built and some trust earned, you should be seeing a genuine upward trend in impressions and the start of real clicks from local searches. It's qualitative, not guaranteed — but it's the honest picture of what consistent effort looks like over a quarter.
One more thing worth knowing: as search shifts toward AI-generated answers, the same foundations — clear services, dedicated pages, location content — are what help those systems understand your business too. Our post on getting found in AI search covers how that's changing and why the basics still matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does SEO take to work for a tradie business?
It varies, but most tradies start to see genuine movement somewhere between two and three months in, with the bigger gains coming after the foundations are in place and you've built out your service and location pages. SEO is slower than paid ads because it relies on Google trusting your site over time — but unlike ads, the traffic keeps coming after you stop paying.
Do I need a blog for tradie SEO?
Not necessarily. A handful of genuinely useful articles that answer real customer questions can help, but publishing a high volume of thin blog posts rarely moves the needle. A well-structured website with dedicated service and location pages matters far more than a big blog. Start with the foundations first.
Should I buy backlinks to rank faster?
No. Buying cheap backlink packages is one of the fastest ways to get your site penalised rather than boosted. Genuine links from suppliers, local business groups, and industry associations are worth far more — and they won't put your site at risk. Earn links the honest way.
Is Google Business Profile enough on its own?
Your Google Business Profile is one of the most important pieces of local SEO, but it works best alongside a proper website that reinforces the same information. A complete profile plus a fast, well-structured website gives you a far stronger presence than either one alone.
Can I do tradie SEO myself or do I need to hire someone?
The foundations — claiming your Google Business Profile, getting your business details consistent, and building out service and location pages — are absolutely doable yourself if you have the time. Where it gets harder is the ongoing work: content, citations, technical optimisation, and keeping up with what's changed. That's where a lot of tradies bring in help.
If you're weighing up the cost of getting this right, our monthly pricing plans show how the foundations get built into your site without a large upfront invoice.
