Local SEO for Tradies: 10 Ways to Get More Customers From Your Service Area

Local SEO strategy diagram for an Australian tradie business service area

Most tradies don't need to rank across the whole country. They need to rank in the suburbs and towns they actually drive to. That's what local SEO is — making sure that when someone in your service area searches for the trade you do, your business is the one they find and call.

It's not about gaming Google. It's about making your business easy to understand, easy to find, and easy to trust. Here are ten practical ways to do that, plus a short list of things to avoid.

    1. Build a Website for Your Trade

Everything else on this list depends on this. A Facebook page or a directory listing isn't a substitute for a website you own and control. Your website is the one place where you decide exactly what's said about your services, your areas and your business — and it's the foundation every other local SEO effort points back to. If you haven't got one yet, that's step one. We cover the why behind this in our post on whether tradies really need a website.

    2. Create Dedicated Service Pages

Don't dump everything onto a single "Our Services" page. If you do hot water repairs, blocked drains, emergency plumbing and gas fitting, give each one its own page. A dedicated page lets you go deep on that service — what it involves, common questions, your process — which gives both customers and search engines far more to work with than a one-line bullet point.

    3. Target the Areas You Actually Service

Be honest about where you work. If you only service the northern suburbs, don't pretend to cover the whole city — you'll attract enquiries you can't take on and frustrate the customers who did contact you. List the real suburbs, towns and regions you drive to, and build your content around them.

    4. Create Useful Location Pages

A location page should genuinely help a local customer understand how you service their area — the suburbs you cover, the types of jobs you do there, local references that show you actually know the place. It's the approach we take on pages like tradie websites for Brisbane and Geelong. The key word is useful — not a copy-paste paragraph with a suburb name swapped in.

    5. Optimise Your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile powers the local map results, so it deserves real attention. Claim it, pick an accurate primary category, list every service individually, set your service areas, add a real phone number and website link, and keep your opening hours (including after-hours availability) up to date. We go deeper on this in our guide to getting found on Google Maps.

    6. Ask Happy Customers for Genuine Reviews

Reviews influence both where you rank and whether a customer picks you once you're there. Ask at the right moment — right after a job well done — and make it easy by sending a direct link to your review page. Respond to reviews professionally, the good and the bad. Never buy or fake reviews; Google can spot it and it can get your profile suspended.

    7. Add Local Proof and Testimonials

Show the work you've done in the areas you service. Before-and-after photos, short testimonials with a suburb attached, case studies of real jobs — all of it tells a local customer "this business works where I live" and gives search engines more local context to work with.

    8. Publish Helpful Trade Content

Answer the questions your customers are actually typing. "How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?", "How often should I service my air conditioner?", "What are the signs of a blocked drain?" — content that genuinely helps a homeowner gives you a shot at showing up for those searches. Need a starting point? Our post on blog ideas for tradie websites has a starter list.

    9. Build Strong Internal Links

Link your pages together so visitors and search engines can move logically between them. A service page should link to the locations you offer it in; a location page should link to the services you do there; a blog post should link to the relevant service or location page. A simple pattern looks like:

Service → Location → Related Service → Blog

This is exactly the kind of structure we build into every site — covered in detail on our SEO for tradies page.

    10. Keep Improving Your Website

Local SEO isn't a one-time checkbox you tick and forget. The businesses that win long-term are the ones that keep adding services, locations, reviews and useful content over months and years. Your website is a foundation you can keep building on — start solid and expand as your business grows.

    What NOT to Do

    • Keyword stuffing — cramming "plumber Brisbane" into every sentence reads badly to humans and can work against you with search engines.
    • Fake reviews — buying or fabricating reviews can get your Google Business Profile suspended.
    • Duplicate suburb pages — dozens of thin pages with only the suburb name changed are easy for Google to spot and devalue.
    • Hidden text — stuffing keywords into text the same colour as the background is an old trick that gets penalised.
    • Buying backlinks — paying for links from low-quality sites can trigger a penalty rather than a boost.
    • Believing ranking guarantees — nobody can legitimately promise a specific Google ranking. Anyone who does is being dishonest.

Sustainable local SEO comes down to building a genuinely useful online presence around your real business — your trade, your services and your locations. Do that consistently and you give yourself the best possible chance of being found by the customers right on your doorstep.
